Biography
Adrian Montero Moya stands among the most internationally acclaimed Costa Rican musicians, praised for his passionate playing, dazzling technique, and boldly innovative programming. A winner of over fifteen prizes in competitions across Europe and the Americas, he is an active recording artist and a tireless advocate for new music, with a particular focus on contemporary Costa Rican and Ibero-American composers. His performances have taken him to concert stages across Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Mexico, the United States, France, Japan, Colombia, and Spain.
Montero’s repertoire moves fluidly from the Baroque era to the present, with contemporary Latin American music at its core. This artistic breadth invites audiences to experience the guitar as both a historical and forward-looking instrument. His discography includes the albums Azulado, devoted to contemporary Costa Rican music, and Sonatas and Partitas, alongside notable collaborations such as Sueños y Sones with Marco Corrales, the Latin Grammy–nominated El ruido del Agua with Eddie Mora, and the world-premiere recording of Alejandro Cardona’s string quintet Oché with the Cuarteto Latinoamericano.
Equally at home in collaborative projects, Montero is a founding member of Quinteto Centroamericano, an unusual string quintet featuring three guitars, cello, and bass. He also performs with Hashi Duo alongside Japanese pianist Moe Takamatsu, exploring musical dialogues between Latin America, Japan, and classic repertoire, and with Melon Dúo, a striking mandolin-and-guitar partnership with Israeli virtuoso Dor Gidon.
Deeply committed to the future of the instrument, Montero combines performance with mentorship and artistic leadership. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in classical guitar performance at the University of South Carolina under Mak Grgić, and serves as co-director of Costa Rica’s Festival and Concurso Nacional de Guitarra, continuing a legacy of excellence while opening new paths for emerging generations of guitarists.
